South Africans will head to the polls this week to elect their local government representatives. The Centre for Analytics and Behavioural Change (CABC) has recorded more than 15,310 social media mentions about South Africa's upcoming local government elections, with illegal immigration emerging as the leading topic. Its monitoring identified 79 potentially harmful posts, including election-rigging claims, anti-immigrant rhetoric and calls to gather at voting stations to prevent foreigners from voting. The CABC has warned that unsubstantiated allegations of electoral fraud and xenophobic narratives could reinforce each other, undermine confidence in the electoral process, and fuel hostility towards migrant communities ahead of the vote.

November 2, 2026 by Editorial Staff 2 Comments Under orders from the Republican administration of Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth the US Army has presented final design plans to the US Commission of Fine Arts to restore and reinstall the Confederate Memorial (now being formally referred to as “the Moses Ezekiel Sculpture”) at Arlington National Cemetery. Restoration and reinstallation of the roughly 30-foot-tall bronze monument featuring sanitized depictions of slavery is estimated to cost about $10 million. The monument was originally removed in December 2023 under a Congressional mandate from the Naming Commission to rename and/or remove Department of Defense assets that commemorate the Confederate States of America (CSA) or any person who voluntarily served with the CSA against the United States.

Alliance for the Future, unveiled at Montreal summit and open to other countries, conceived for world ‘shaken by new storms’ Canada and Europe have announced a new alliance of like-minded nations to serve as both a “protective canopy under which our citizens can thrive” and a powerful hedge against the unpredictable nature of geopolitics, while welcoming other countries to join. Speaking to reporters on Friday from Montreal, the prime minister, Mark Carney, and the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen , called the new partnership the Alliance for the Future and said the “deepest possible partnership between Canada and the 27-member bloc had the potential to offer unprecedented stability and opportunity”. “Our societies have been shaken by new storms,” Carney told reporters, referring to the damaging effects of the climate emergency but also the “erosion of democratic norms” and “the weaponization of trade”.
